Welcome to St. Ambrose Parish! Thank you for coming to share the first Sunday of Advent with us this weekend.
ACTIVE WAITING: As this new liturgical year unfolds, today’s readings are most appropriate, for they root us in what it means to live authentically as Christians. The Gospel, with its frightening predictions of the end times, invites the hearer to “be vigilant at all times” (Luke 21:36). This kind of vigilance is not at all passive for the Christian. Instead, it is a kind of active waiting. And what should we be doing while we are waiting for the coming of the Lord? The second reading gives us the answer: “abound in love for one another and for all” (1 Thessalonians 3:12). Today is all about promises made and fulfilled. May this Advent season root us all firmly in a stance of active waiting for the Lord, who brings justice and peace.
Remember, the most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling; and even more beautiful is knowing that you are the reason behind it! Stay well and enjoy your week.

Pastor’s Musings
A bishop, a priest and a deacon, were about to be executed for preaching the Gospel in a foreign land. They bring out the bishop first and the guard shouts, “Ready. . . Aim. . .” and suddenly the bishop yells, “EARTHQUAKE.” When everyone looks around, the bishop runs off. Next they bring out the priest. The guard shouts, “Ready. . . Aim. . .” and suddenly the priest yells ‘TORNADO.” When everyone ducks, the priest runs off. By then, of course the deacon had it figured out. They bring him out, and when the guard shouts, “Ready. . . Aim. . .” Suddenly the deacon yells, “FIRE.”

Questions People Ask
Q. What might I do to get more out of Advent?
A. What a pity that Advent has been devoured by the commercial side of Christmas. Advent develops hope in the time of waiting, and hope is a virtue most needed to sustain our faith in the wilderness of scandals and recession. Try to let Christmas wait until Christmas. Let Advent be a time for more reflection and prayer. Get in touch with those areas of life where we struggle, where we experience our incompleteness, where we come to recognize our need of God. Christmas will be properly celebrated by those who know their need of God. Come Lord Jesus, come.

ANGEL TREE
Once again this year St. Ambrose will be adopting little children who are needy or ill for Christmas. These children range in age from infants to teenagers. They come from families who are considered economically needy. Their families are unable to buy toys or special treats so that is why we become their “angels” at the holiday season. We ask that you please take a tag (or two or more) from the tree, shop for the gifts and return the tag with the UNWRAPPED gift by December 19th. You may bring your gift to the Church or the Rectory Office during the week. In previous years, your response to the Angel Tree has been overwhelming. We call on you and your family to sacrifice this Christmas and reach out again to one child...two, if you can. The age and gender will be found on the tag you choose from the tree.
God will bless your generous gift a hundred fold in mysterious ways...please help us light up these children’s lives this holy season...be an “angel.” Also, if you know of a child/children in our parish in need, please contact the Rectory Office with their name, address and phone number. We will contact them.

RCIA—Rite of Christian Initiation Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation Adults, is a process whereby an individual becomes a full member of the Catholic church. Those making this journey come from a variety of backgrounds: some have been baptized, some haven’t; some come from other Christian churches, and some may be Catholics who have decided to complete their initiation into the Church. Whatever their background, all are experiencing the call of God and share in a common spiritual journey. The RCIA as practiced today finds its origin in the once customary rituals of the early Church by which people were prepared for the reception of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, and full initiation into the Christian community. After an absence of several hundred years in Church history, the Second Vatican Council reinstated these ancient rites. The RCIA journey calls for a serious look at one’s life under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Witnessing this journey challenges us as a community to examine our motives and deepen our own lives through the example of our new members. It is the whole community of Christ who welcomes those responding to God’s call, and in doing so, answers its own call to build up the Body of Christ on earth. Anyone who is interested is invited to join us on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm in the Chapel of our Church.

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION
In an effort to protect our St. Ambrose Parish family during the “Flu Season”, it appears prudent to temporarily refrain from offering the Sign of Peace as a handshake. A verbal offering of Christ’s peace to others during Mass will suffice. Also, because of the possibility of infection via receiving Holy Communion on the tongue as part of a line of communicants, unless it is a matter of conscience, it is requested that we use the more traditional manner of receiving Holy Communion by creating a “throne for our Savior” by extending our joined hands to receive. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
